<p class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 150%;">
<p class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 150%;"><span style="font-family: &quot;Times New Roman&quot;;"><span> </span>During October 1993, I advertised three times in <em>The Canberra Times</em>, personal column of the classifieds (Saturday edition): &#8220;There is a way out of homosexuality for gays who want to change.<span> </span>Ph Spencer (I gave the phone number).&#8221;</span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 150%;">
<p class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 150%;"><span style="font-family: &quot;Times New Roman&quot;;"><span> </span>I received about 25 phone calls, some of them abusive, but we had had enough men to begin a &#8220;Steps Out&#8221; group for those who wanted to be redeemed from homosexuality.<span> </span>One fellow, when I mentioned that this was a Christian-based group, shouted: &#8220;That&#8217;s your opinion; I know that homosexuality is right.<span> </span>I was born that way.&#8221;<span> </span>And then came a pile of swear words.</span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 150%;">
<p class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 150%;"><span style="font-family: &quot;Times New Roman&quot;;"><span> </span>Sometimes as I have shared my testimony of how Christ invaded our Bundaberg home through the 1959 Billy Graham Crusade in Brisbane (a land-line crusade rally at the Bundaberg Show Grounds) and my parents trusted Christ.<span> </span>This led to the salvation of the 3 kids in the family.<span> </span>I have thought: I&#8217;m sure a Hare Krishna could tell of a changed lifestyle.<span> </span>Mormons speak of a &#8220;burning in the bosom&#8221; that convinced them the Book of Mormon was true and this changed their lives.<span> </span>If I base my witnessing on a personal testimony, what&#8217;s the difference from the Hare Krishna or the Mormon?</span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 150%;">
<p class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 150%;"><span style="font-family: &quot;Times New Roman&quot;;"><span> </span>That great English defender of the faith and writer, the late C.S. Lewis, saw the battle lines.<span> </span>He contended that the final conflict between religions would involve Hinduism and Christianity, because these two would offer the only viable religions.<span> </span>Because Hinduism absorbs all religious systems, and Christianity excludes all others, maintaining the supremacy of the claims of Jesus Christ alone (in Walter Martin, <em>The New Age Cult</em>, Bethany House Publishers, 13).</span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 150%;">
<p class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 150%;"><span style="font-family: &quot;Times New Roman&quot;;"><span> </span>These examples raise a critical issue when we consider Christianity: are we dealing with an individual religious experience, a personal opinion, a personal choice, or is this truth?<span> </span>One of the core verses is:</span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 150%;"><span style="font-family: &quot;Times New Roman&quot;;"> </span></p>

<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin-left: 36pt; text-indent: -36pt; line-height: 150%;">
<p class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 150%;"><span style="font-family: &quot;Times New Roman&quot;;"><span> </span>We often think of Christ&#8217;s words as metaphors:</span></p>

<p class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 150%;"><span style="font-family: &quot;Times New Roman&quot;;"><span> </span>I am the door; I am the vine; I am the light of the world; and we can tend to see these words metaphorically: I am the way; I am the truth; I am the life.</span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 150%;">
<p class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 150%;"><span style="font-family: &quot;Times New Roman&quot;;"><span> </span>In our world today, that bases truth on personal opinion, the majority vote, or the views of a prominent leader, Jesus is saying something remarkably <span style="text-decoration: underline;">radical</span>.<span> </span>So revolutionary that it will change our view of the church and our world if we understand what Jesus is saying.</span></p>
